A colleague of mine sent me an article about how cool librarians are. It seems to have caused quite an uproar with a few of the blogging librarians (who are all quite cool also). (link, link, link, link, link). I’m not quite a librarian yet (one class and an internship away from graduation) but when I do become one, I want to be a guybrarian. Honestly, I’m really not cool. I’m really quite a geek. I like sci-fi and fantasy. I can remember quotes from all sorts of movies. I like video games and comic books. I’m a nerd. I have kids so my night life is gone. Recently my wife and I have enjoyed living vicariously through the show Entourage. (We love Johnny Drama.) One of my current goals is to finally finish the campaigns in StarCraft. (I really enjoy totally obliterating my enemy.) I’m a total geek.
The article was pretty lame but what are you going to do? That’s journalism now a days. Wrap the information in a nice bite sized package so that it looks pretty and easy to swallow, even if that means that the information inside is misrepresented. The writer probably was under pressure to get it done, make it interesting and keep it within a certain word count and so she did what she had to do. The one thing that made me laugh is the picture used in the article. The geekiest looking guy there is all the way on the right, and he is not a librarian, he is an author.
